Discussion on Breeding after late term abortion

Dear Dr. O,

My 7 yr. old mare just aborted aT 313 days. This was going to be her second foal. There was great evidence the placenta was to blame since a portion of it was not normal. No pathology was done since there are no other broodmares in the barn and I was told that 50% of the time nothing is found. My question; Is it ok to rebreed at the 30 day heat or would waiting another cycle or two be beneficial in your opinion? Also, is it wise to do a uterine cytology to see if she is "clean" or will she have flushed her own system if a "bug" was to blame for the abortion?

Thanks,

Kathy

I think a thorough exam of the mare and her reproductive tract, including cytology would be worthwhile.
