I have a 16 year old quarter horse gelding who was recently diagnosed with an enlarged irregular shaped thyroid that is alittle hard. He also has some bumps on the throat latch near the thyroid enlargement that have started to spread to his chest and neck and a few at the girth location. My vet doesn't think this is related to thyroid and prescibed chlorhexi derm shampoo. She did a T4 blood test and the results came back within normal range. She told me to watch him for clinical signs (like founder)over the next 6 months and we should retest him after that. she thinks the irregular shape of thyroid may or my not be due to tumors and mentioned that I could have a biopsie/ultrasound done if I wanted more information about the enlargement now however she has not done this proceedure before and would have to research it further. I have read your papers on both hypo and hyer thyroidism as well as reviewed the various dicussions that people have posted. My question to you is do you think I should proceed with any further testing at this time or just wait and retest in 6 months. After reading your papers on hypothyroidism it doesn't appear that founder is a clinical sign of thyriod problems. What signs or changes in his condition should I be alerted to. His weight is alittle down and he does seems to be urinating more than normal. He was shaved in Dec when I moved him down to Fl from NC so it is hard to say about his coat.

Hello Cynthia,
I went to the article on hyperthyroidism and saw that it did not address enlarged glands well and have updated it. Check it out, I think it answers most your questions if not bring it back here.
