  Discussion on Contracted heal
Author Message

My yearling gelding has started to develop a contracted heal on one front foot, He seems to walk straight and has nice straight legs, but this one hoof has been real straight on the inside wall and now my farrier says the heal is starting to contract. He is growing real fast and I have had my vet out to check his legs and discuss his feeding program, (he tends to be quite slim, but every time I increase his grain he has a growth spurt) He is turned out all day so he get alot of exercise. Is there anything I should be doing - special trimming, feeding biotin, etc.? or should I just wait and see if he grows out of it?

Hello Kim,
We have an article on this condition that explains the possible causes of contracted heels and you should look to see if any apply to your situation. Once the cause is determined the best treatment can then be prescribed, see Equine Diseases: Lameness: Foot and Sole Problems: Contracted Heels.
