Does anyone know where I might be able to locate a nose veil (as they call it in the U.K.) or a dust mask which covers the nose. Dust can irritate my horse's airways and I have heard that these are available in the U.K. and can be worn over the horse's nose while riding to minimize dust inhalation. Appreciate any input. Getting gnats in her nose drives my mare nuts, so I too tried to find a nose veil. When I couldn't, I made one by sewing a thinned-out, trimmed mop head to a velcro fuzzy that goes around the noseband. I sewed a piece of rag across the back of the mop strings, about halfway down, to stabilize them -- without it, the strings blew up over her nose when it was windy. Granted we look pretty funny, but my horse is happier so it is worth it. |

my girlfriend uses the crotch of panty hose to cover her horses nose...yes it looks funny, but it works.. |

From one of my posts from last year:
I recently read of a horse with a head shaking problem. The horse was nearly unrideable as it
would start with the head shaking even with mild exercise.
At rest or turned out, the horse was okay.
The rider tried a great deal - meds, more aggressive training, etc.
What finally ended up working was putting a bit of nylon stocking over the horse's nostrils -
whatever was annoying the horse was prevented from impinging his nostrils and going up his
airways and he worked very quietly.
I've just read of where this same solution helped another rider on another board. Apparently
some of the race horse catalogs have a device you can buy. Folks have fashioned their own
nylon net that velcros over the nose band and hangs over the nostrils.
I'd search in race horse supply catalogs or fashion a home made one out of netting or stockings. |

thanks for the input so far, they all sound useable, albeit amusing. In the meantime I have tried to create one myself which made my horse look like an Arabian lady - had everyone in stitches, so am presently trying to be more civilised and I have purchased some interfacing which is similar to the human version and am going to try something with that. I will let you know this outcome. Christine. |

I guess she didn't want to be seen with us and our mop contraption any longer. :-) I ordered one, but it has not yet arrived. It sure looks discreet enough in the photo. The only downside seems to be the price: $36 U.S. But having gone the do-it-yourself route, and being tired of the giggles, I was ready to shell out!

I never saw anything like that before! How neat! It looks like it's made of bee keeper's mesh. I have a riding hood made of that. It covers my horse's face, ears and neck, but I never saw one that covers the nose. What WILL they come up with next?

Just to follow up, I got my nose veil in the mail today. The $36 includes three nets and a re-usable velcro piece that makes the nets adjustable for different horses. Pretty cool design.
