Discussion on How much Motility is needed?

Hi Dr. O and everyone else.

I've run a couple of searches, and am having a problem with the search coming back with a blank screen. I don't know if that means there were no matches, or if there's a problem.

Anyway, what I'm trying to find out is, what is considered "normal" for sperm motility after shipping?

I am attempting to get my mare pregnant using shipped semen. I took her up to a reproductive specialist (because she's 17, and didn't get pregnant last year). They got the first shipment today, and the vet called me and said the semen quality was poor, with only about 5% motility. She's going to order some more by air shipment, and try to time my mare's ovulation with ovuplant, so that she ovulates very close to the insemination time. My second question is, how low can the motility rate go, and still have a reasonable chance to get my mare pregnant? I know it only takes 1 little guy to do the job, but how many need to be in the collection, for 1 to be there in the end?

Thanks for any help.

Heidi

Hello Heidi,
Concerning the search problem, I have not had any other reports of problems and I went and tried them and they seem to be woriking fine.

Some browsers have a glitch in them in that they default the "Search In" field blank in the Discussions Only search engine. They should be defaulting to the selection of "All Topics" so select this from the DrOp down list in that field. Is this what is happening?

I am afraid it does not just take 1. Beleive or not to get maximum pregnancy rates takes one hundred million progressively motile sperm (PMS). When numbers fall below this pregnancy rates DrOp. Many semen shopppers hate to push the edge too close so that they ship with the goal of 300 million PMS. There is no percentage that is magic but when this calculation is done you want:

total count x %PMS > 100,000,000

There is one caveat here. Frequently, abuse to the sperm occurs between the Equitainer and the microscope stage, due to an inability to control the temp closely, which may artificially lower the motility.
