My fifteen-month-old (Apploosa/half-Arabian) colt's testicles haven't descended. Since everything I've read says they needed to descend by about the tenth day, I'm thinking they're ruined by now. So I guess he's going to be a gelding after all.
The question is, what do I do now? Do I need to have him gelded still? How is this done - I'm sure it's much more involved than it would have been with the usual intact colt. Sedation? Surgery? Lots o' money?
Dang it. He would've made pretty babies!

Hello Larry,
The term for retained testicles is cryptorchid and we have an article that covers most of your questions on the problem at, Care for Horses » Management & Procedures » Castration in Horses.

I would definitely pay to get the surgery done if you plan on keeping him. nothing is worse than a proud cut gelding.

Thanks Dr. O. Another great article from this site. I thought I'd looked everywhere for it - but not THERE!
I guess I'll be callin' the vet out!
