Dear Dr. O:
I am contemplating purchasing a 5 yr. old Hanovarian gelding that roars. He is being used as a hunter/jumper and is in good physical condition considering his wind impediment. This is a huge decision to make so I have been trying to research the tie back surgery as thoroughly as possible. One of my concerns has to do with the recovery process. I live in the Southwest where it is very hot and dry this time of year. Would having this surgery done during the heat impede the recovery for this horse in any way? Also, what is the recommended lay-up period and time table for reconditioning the horse after surgery. I am sure it is important to the success of the surgery. I will continue to use him as a H/J. Thanks for your input! Jodie

Hello Jodie,
I don't believe your environment will have a noticable affect of the prognosis.

Indiviual surgeons will have different ideas on recovery and reconditioning and in fact may have different recommendations for each case depending on the particular facts of each case. So best is to get these recommendations from the surgeon and possibly modified by the veterinarian on the case. That said 4 weeks stall rest followed by 4 weeks small paddock rest is a frequent recommendation. At that time training can recommence and his overall condition will determine the reconditioning times.
