I had posted last week about my horse having choked and been tubed by the vet. He wanted her on antibiotics for precautionary measures (according to my husband), she rec'd 2 doses of penicillan, but I was unable to give her any more shots for fear of losing my life, I can't take her temp for the same reason. My vet then switched her to SMZ, she got 10 pills twice a day for a week. She has had no antibiotics since Wednesday morning. Last night when I feed her her breathing sounded 'noisy', kinda of moist, but she seemed okay this morning. She is eating fine, does not seem lathargic and has only a very small amount of nasal discharge from her tubed nostril. Since I am unable to take her temp, can I assume she is going to be okay? or is she still in danger of developing pneumonia? My vet had surgery so I can't call him. Any thoughts.....

Kathleen all medications, including antibiotics have a half life (meaning the time it takes for the half of the medication to be cleared from the system which you can then double to get an accurate number of how long the medication will be in the system). You can find it on the bottle or in the literature or online here and it will give an indication for how long the antibiotics will stay in the system. I presume seven days of antibiotics will stay in the system for a while covering you this week but Dr. O will have to comment on that to give you a precise figure on how long seven days of SMZ will cover your horse after it's been discontinued. You should be fine especially since it was given, if remember correctly, to prevent pneumonia and not to treat an existing case correct?
I have a feeling that all is well but Dr O can chime in and you can always put in a telephone consult with the vet to get further information.
Good luck with your mare.

Take care,
Corinne

Corinne, Thanks, I do believe it was to prevent and not treat, (I wasn't there when the vet came and never thought to ask him) I was also working along the assumption that if it had been to treat he would have prescribed a longer period for her to be on the antibiotics. I was unaware of the amount of time the antibiotics would stay in her system, thanks for the info. Kathie

I too don't think your description fits pneumonia but for more on the clinical signs see,
