My horse fell and cut his knee and apparently got a puncture wound as it became very infected and his knee was very swollen. He is on Trimethoprim Sulfa and some Bute. Yesterday I noticed he had scratched his tail so much he had a small lesion next to his tail, which I washed. Could the medications be bothering his intestinal tract? He is on Strongid and was given a paste wormer just about 2 weeks ago so I don't think it's worms.
Thanks
Tamy

Yes the medication can bother the GI tract of horses, but scratching his tail is not a sign of this. Colic and diarrhea are.

Here is my concern. I believe my mare has a yeast infection and she is pregnant. My vet gave me trimethoprim sulfa. If I am correct doesnt anibiotic}s make yeast infection worse and can she be treated with human treatments such as gyna lotriman. I know it sounds silly but I dont want to gamble on this mare with the Sulfa. You can give Benadril to dogs? thanks kristin

Why do you suspect a yeast infection? Did the vet say anything about it when he examined her?

Yes trimethoprim sulfa will not be effective for a yeast. We have discussed fungal metritis before, run a search for other discussions.

Sara,
He didnt say anything. Although she has a yellowish discharge from her vagina. I dont understand why he didnt take a culture but he just wanted to try trypto. first. I think its too big a gamble. Kristin

Dr. O may have a comment here; but our vet always does a culture to see what bacteria there is before he prescribes an antitbiotic as there are quite a few bacteria that can infect the vaginal tract. And, there can also be yeast. There can also be a combination of yeast and bacteria. You don't want to mess around too much because a bad bacterial infection can affect the fetus. Would the vet do a culture if you ask him. It won't take very long to get the results.

Though culture important to establish sensitivities, the diagnosis does not require the extra time. It can be done simply by staining and looking at the discharge, the yeast have a characteristic appearance.
