I have a mare that stuck herself above the eye and it became infected. Her eye is fine but due to the location and her lack of cooperation. I am not able to do much topical treatment. My vet recommended procain penicillin 30 cc, once per day. She is a good 1300 lb horse. Does this sound OK or should it be twice per day. Thanks shelley |

It really depends on what type organisms and how well the wound is draining. It really should be twice daily for many organisms that might infect such a wound. However, I do not think antibiotics are a substitute for good wound care and might even prevent their needing to be administered. Perhaps a sedative once daily or best is to do some training here to get the horse to lower his head for treatment. DrO |
