I have a mare that stuck herself above the eye and it became infected. Her eye is fine but due to the location and her lack of cooperation. I am not able to do much topical treatment. My vet recommended procain penicillin 30 cc, once per day. She is a good 1300 lb horse. Does this sound OK or should it be twice per day.
Thanks shelley

It really depends on what type organisms and how well the wound is draining. It really should be twice daily for many organisms that might infect such a wound. However, I do not think antibiotics are a substitute for good wound care and might even prevent their needing to be administered. Perhaps a sedative once daily or best is to do some training here to get the horse to lower his head for treatment.
