Hi Dr O, I hope you don't think I'm taking liberties asking this question! How much do you pay for potassium bromide and who supplies you please? That crazy epileptic mare of mine now has it combined with phenobarbitone and is doing very well, although she had a seizure a few weeks ago I raised the dose slightly of each drug and she seems to have stopped again. I'd absolutely recommend this "cocktail" as I have been able to reduce the phenobarb dose from 50 tablets a day down to 29 (well 34 now that I've raised it but its still a big difference) The downside is that the only supply I can get in ready made capsules costs GBP90 a month - FOR BROMIDE!!!! Over here it is marketed as a supplement so I should have no trouble ordering on-line but I just can't find anyone else who supplies it, hence I'm picking your brains. Tablets would be just as acceptable. The capsules I use at the moment are conveniently 1000mg each. The cost of drugs for animal use over here is a disgrace, I'm about to complain to the Prime Minister!! I know of a retired lady who spends £42 per month on bromide for her little dog, and Cara costs me £170 a month for her prescription. A friend's vet has refused to treat her horse for seizures on the grounds of cost. Whatever happened to compassion for animals? |

Here it runs about 5 to 10 dollars US (3.3 to 6.6 GBP) a gram (1000 mg) over here. DrO |

Hi Dr O, Thanks - that's even worse than over here! Cara has 10 x 1000mg every day and a pot of 60 capsules (1000mg each capsule) costs about £18 including tax. Perhaps I'll try asking fellow member Imogen from Ireland as all medications cost less there than the UK. Have a Happy Christmas and best wishes for 2002. Helen & Cara |
