hi, i am sure there is a discussion on this but i cant find it! our old pony is on bute 2x daily and i have been giving it in her feed with peppermint to disguise it. trouble is she takes ages to eat and we have to hold the bucket so she doesnt knock it over and loose the bute. she also has devils claw, vitamins and cod liver oil. we have tried giving her a small feed first with the medicines in, which we hold the bucket, and then her main tea which we can leave. i am wondering if anyone has found a better way? i used to put tablets into a hollowed out carrot but the bute is a powder. i was thinking of a sandwich but she struggles to chew bit pieces of bread. any ideas very much appreciated. thanks

Claire I would recommend that you get a feeder that affixes to the wall. We have a horse that tries to push all his feed out on the ground and we got one of those feeders that is shaped like a fish bowl. He is not dropped a grain in 5 years.

With bute, which is the one they usually hate, dissolve in honey/warm water and squirt into the mouth using an old syringe. Bloody sight quicker in my experience...

All the best

I also use the mixture in a syringe, but I use applesauce to mix it with. I had one mare on long-term bute use who looked forward to her applesauce treat .

I use the applesauce mixture also - but I use two syringes - One with the bute and applesauce - the other straight applesauce. Since it takes bute a while to disolve, I cut the tablets in half, put them in the syringe and add just enough hot water to cover them. I leave that, either overnight, or all day, then when it's time to give it, just suck the applesauce into the syringe and it's ready to go. First I give her the bute syringe and follow that up with the straight applesauce, helps to take the taste out of her mouth.

I, too, dissolve bute first, but then I use babyfood--either carrots or applesauce to mix with for my syringe. I've found that regular applesauce is sometimes too chunky for my syringe.

This is a good discussion, I have been wondering for some time if there were a way we could administer bute or any of the typical long term medicines for joints or otherwise into a cookie treat. That way we could just had feed it. My horses are ususally pastured together and its hard to feed them any meds without separating everyone each time. And frankly, making pastes every day for months is awfully tedious.
My big concern was that if you baked them, the 350 F might harm the effectiveness.
Does Dr O know about which meds can be heated, or maybe he knows a good no-bake horse cookie recipe.
That way you could prepare a weeks worth at a time and save alot of preparation.
Any one try this ?

Wondering what the effects of bute used long term,
on a pregnant mare.

This issue is discussed in the article Equine Medications and Nutriceuticals: Anti-inflammatories, Steroids, and Arthritis Treatment: Phenylbutazone. Also run a search on bute and pregnancy as this is a often raised question.

I have a horse, severely lame with high ringbone, that I fought to get bute into for about a year before I found a method that works. I take about a half cup of "Triple Crown Equine Senior", put it in a ziplock bag, mix with enough "hot" water to turn the feed into a mash. I then put a bute tablet into the bag and smash it with a hammer, mix it up and dump it into the feed bucket. I have tried this with all 8 of my horses and they've all eaten it without a problem. I don't know why this works but the key seems to be the "Triple Crown, Senior". Good Luck
