Acetylsalicylic Acid: Aspirin Use in Horses
Introduction
To relieve minor pain (not colic) and fever. Aspirin can be used for a number of inflammatory problems and even substituted for bute in a pinch.
This article is about the contraindications, toxic effects, dosages, and association drug rules that apply to this medication.
Use in Horses
The half life of aspirin in plasma is seven minutes and it was no longer detectable in plasma after one and ½ hours. Ponies' may have a longer elimination time within one study the half life being 1 hour.
Aspirin differs from other NSAIDs in it ability to irreversibly inhibit cyclooxygenase. This has a profound affect on clotting time. Following treatment with aspirin, bleeding times (the time it takes for a wound to quit bleeding) where markedly increased for up to 48 hours.
