My vet said to give my horse aspirin (1 TBLSP twice a day) to help with his arthritis/joint pain. They said it was a small amount that shouldn't irritate his stomach. They also said Cosequin is OK, too. He is only getting 1/2-1 teaspoon of aspirin - 1 once a day (sometimes every other) as he doesn't like the taste. I started with a small amt - seeing if he will get used to the taste and am gradually increasing the amt. I started giving him Cough Free powder as well, as he has allergies. I read an article that certain herbs shouldn't be mixed with aspirin and possibly other supplements as they could cause problems. These are the ingredients in the Cough Free:
Elecampane Root
Ginger Root
Fenugreek Seed
Ferrous Sulfate Monohydrate
Sulphur
Dehydrated Kelp
Dicalcium Phosphate
Comfrey Root
Charcoal
Calcium Carbonate

Is this combination OK with the aspirin and Cosequin?

Hello Valerie,
I am afraid there is no scientific information on whether this is a safe practice not but I do not know of a specific contraindications. However the elecampane is known to be severely irritating to mucous membranes, perhaps it might potentiate ulcerations.

Contacting the company that makes the Cough Free for a list of drugs that should not be mixed might be an avenue for further information.
