I just got fecal count results back from our vet. Our horses have very high counts of many species of Strongyles. The foal's count was over 200 and another horse was 31x. The vet recommends the double dose of Panacur for 5 days then follow up with Ivermectin in 4 weeks. My concerns are these: If the foal's count is that high and I do the purge is he at risk of impaction colic from the dead parasites or possible toxemia from the decomposing parasites? Should I use mineral oil in their evening feed if I paste in the morning to keep things moving or will this inhibit absorbtion of the wormer? Should I use ProBios during or after treatment to return the intestines to happy state. What about giving this treatment to pregnant mares or horses that are on Gastrogard for initial ulcer treatment. Lots of questions, I have called my vet with all of the above questions but was hoping for some feedback from y'all.

I think your concerns are real Denise but for slightly different reasons. Since you don't mention round worm eggs, they will not be a problem. However enteritis from encysted larvae die off is possible.

I would consider using the protocol for debilitated (heavily parasitized) horses in the article Horse Care > Worms, Deworming & Parasite Control > Deworming Schedules. The article explains more about this problem and suitable wormers for pregnant mares. I don't think oil or Probios are indicated however. Following cleaning the horses out you should follow our deworming recommendations the article on Overview of Deworming on the same topic page explains why.

I read the article on worming and I began searching the archives for getting rid of small strongyles. Denise asked a question that I need the answer to and I can't find it. If the horse is on the initial treatment of gastrogard for ulcers, is it safe to give the 5 day double dose of panacur?
Thanks.

We don't know gaitedlady, I find no research into this question. On the surface, it is hard to see how the two drugs would interact adversely.
