hi everyone,
my filly got kicked inside of hind leg 5 or six inches above her hock two weeks ago. shes been fine till this morn I go out and her whole hock area is swollen.Its not hot to touch but maybe a little warm. cant tell. shes not limping when walking but when she pivots to turn you can tell it hurts. the swelling is below where the original kick was. she is acting very leery of the mare she was in with. I wondering if this is a new kick or maybe the old kick got worse. I wish I had so0me bute on hand. I dont know if I should have the vet out or not. I dont have a horse trailer...Think I should just give her some asprin and see what happens? maybe Ill go take a pic and show you guys.
I swear if it isnt one thing its another with this filly.

Sorry you are feeling poorly. Hang in there.
If the swelling is from the old kick, then you may need to have the vet out. Can you take the horse's temperature? A fever will indicate infection. Was there a break in the skin with the kick two weeks ago?
Bute would be good. My inclination, if this is an old kick is to wrap it with hot towels, but if this is a new injury or sprain, cold would be best.
A vet exam would be good, and he could prescribe Bute for you so you will have some on hand. |

Hope you feel better soon Leslie! I ditto what Holly says... I wonder if it could be swelling from the old kick that's migrated down from gravity to her hock? I found my yearling with a swollen hock also-no clue what happened. He was pretty lame at anything more then a walk. After consulting my vet, we cold hosed, buted and in about a week, the swelling was gone and he was sound. My vet had mentioned if it was an infection, it would get worse instead of better with the bute/cold hosing. |

If it were me I'd get it checked. I'm always nervous about swellings and injuries that involve a joint. Usually, they are minor, but every once in a while they turn out to be something major; and when that's the case, the sooner dealt with the better.
Sorry about the morning sickness! (I still remember how it feels!) As I'm sure you've been told, it gets better. |

The first kick bled a stream of blood. I called the vet and he said to pressure bandage it to stop the bleeding. I did, bleeding stopped. It was barely swollen maybe the size of a small flat plum. I kept my eye on it, feeling it for heat or more significant swelling but never felt any. the small swelling that was there can still be felt. But now the whole hock inside of leg and out is very swollen. this is several inches lower than original kick. I talked to my vets secratary and shes going to see what he wants to do. |

k I just talked to my vet and hes gunna leave me some bute out at the office. He said bute and cold hosing. if not better by early next week then to call him ... his exact words were " I'll wanna know". lol
Basically what you all said to do ... hmmm you guys secret vets?!
thanks guys for your prompt response it gives peace of mind just to know there's someone else out there.
now I'm off to figure out what Im doing wrong with the pic uploads....grrrrrr |

Awesome Leslie! You'll know within a few days if it's not improving..it did take a bit for my boy to show improvement, I wanna say maybe 4 days. He also didn't appreciate the hose, so I did more cold "sponging" then hosing, but it did the trick! |

Leslie, of course the concern is the wound area becoming infected in which case insuring adequate drainage, debridement, and possibly antibiotics are important. An important piece of information is does the horse have a fever? If so more than bute and cold hosing may be indicated. In all cases I would hot pack the opening in an attempt to get the wound open and draining.

Hi, apart from any infection I find the best way to help reduce swelling is to wrap a sweat bandage on. After hosing I will let dry then bandage any cut area with green wound cream (a pen. type cream made by our vets here, lots of other wonderful items out there) Then I will put furozone(sp?) ointment on, a quilted wrap, saran over that, then wrap with a fleece. I don't leave this on any more than 12 hours if I have the saran on there. Works great! Even if you have no furozone, just doing the other helps. You will feel how wet the quilting is when you take it off. The hock is for sure tougher to wrap, but can be easily done with a figure 8 pattern ending at the top of hock. Good luck! |
