I was wondering if anyone has tried any type of appetite stimulant on horses. I have very picky eater who I have spent many years on getting to a proper weight. She has EPSM, and I have started feeding her a new special diet (I tried a different one, and it really didn't help much). She ate it for about a month, showed marked improvement in her gaits and jumping from being able to use her hind end finally, then, in the past few days, she has decided not to eat her feed any more. I am cutting her down, and will see if she finishes off less, but I also wanted to see if anyone knew of any non harmful appetite stiumulants I could try to get her to eat more regularly. This can't be good for her digestion. |

I used Focus Weight, and it seemed to have helped on a very picky eater that I owned for over thirty years. He was never a big eater, and for all those years he would drive the other horses mad, by "saving" his feed, and periodically returning to it during the night and crunching it noisily. As he got well up into his thirties, these periods of not eating took a greater and greater toll. The last few years ( which were very healthy ones ), he was on a pelleted whole feed, Focus Weight, and corn oil. We broke his ration into 3 feedings and always added water to the mixture. He also had hay ( which he couldn't chew ), and access to grass ( which he could chew ). For some reason, with that combination, he never went "off his feed" again. I'm not sure how this fits in with EPSM though.

Elizabeth, Depends upon how much fat is in the pellets, and how many carbohydrates. She needs a pound of fat a day, and as few carbos as possible. I actually don't have a number of carbohydrates, but I imagine it is something along the scale of an Atkins like diet. Anyway, the Focus and the oil would work great for her, but only it she would eat it! I will look into that supplement and maybe ask for a sample to see if she'll eat it. Thanks! Alicia |
