Hi Dr O,

My horse had a mild case of colic Saturday morning. I therefore did not give him any grain until Sunday evening...consequently I also realized that he missed two doses of Strongid C....He gets one dose per feeding (a total of twice daily).

He was out to pasture all day Sunday.

My question is do I need to feed a supplementary dewormer because i missed his regular dosings? What are the implications of his missing two doses of Strong C?

Thanks for the help,
Charlotta

I would not worry too much about this Charlotta and figure the twice yearly ivermectin will pick up the slack. By the way are you dividing the recommended daily dose in 2 and giving that twice daily or are you giving the recommended dose twice daily?

I appreciate your quick reply, sorry I wasn't clear: I divide the daily dose in two. (And he does get the ivermectin twice a year).
Thanks!

I have tried to research this question and I cannot find a clear cut answer. The instructions implies, but does not directly state, that the product should be given once daily.

Here is the possible problem with giving the daily dose divided twice daily: the one time maximal concentration over each 24 hours is less than when given just once daily. This is not a concern if the length of exposure is more important than the single maximal dose. In fact if this is true the divided dose may be better. BUT...there are drugs that the one time 24 hour max dose is the most important factor affecting efficacy. I suggest following the directions, though implied, of once daily administration until we know more.

Hi--Just wondering if there is any up-to-date info on whether the full dose should be given once per day or (half as much) twice a day.

Thanks!
Jeans.

There is not anything new and we still recommend following label directions jean.
