I am having my 7 mo old colt gelded tomorrow and we put him on acetazolamide a week ago so there would not be any problems. He is hypp n/h. Tonight when I put him in the barn I noticed both sides of his throatlatch was swollen and even into his cheek/jawbone. Could this be a reaction to the pills? He has not been anywhere in months and none of our other horses have been anywhere in weeks. He is pastured alone and its ben too cold for bugs. It was very cold today could that cause it? If it is a reaction to the pills does he need to be on them to geld and if so for how long afterwards? |

Hello Lori, While I do not know if this is a reaction to the medication, I think I would consider postponing the castration. This is not a typical reaction to this medication and may represent an allegic type reaction. Coming off the medication is a decision that your vet should make but may be the only way to discover if it is the cause. Improvement coming off the medicine will not be diagnostic but the swelling returning when restarted will be pretty convincing. DrO |
