My equine vet has recommended using a topical preparation of Ketoprofen/DMSO gel to treat a tendon inflammation in my 19 year old Irish Sport Horse mare. This is an old injury in her left hind leg which flares up occasionally, leaving her very lame & reluctant to bear a lot of weight on the leg. The articles in Horseadvice.com don't have any reference to topical application of this drug. Would appreciate your thoughts/comments on it's safety & efficacy & protocal when used in this manner.

I think you are right Chris, we do not have a discussion on this and I have to admit I have never seen the recommendation. Checking the major medical databases I do not see any references to this procedure or DMSO mixed with any NSAID and then applied topically. We do have information and research concerning steroids and DMSO over the hock and antimicrobials mixed with DMSO for fungal ulcers but no NSAIDs. I am afraid your vet will have to be your pilot here. I think there is a potential for tissue irritation where applied so: Has he done this before with good result?

Thanks for your response Dr.O. Apparently my vet has had good results with this procedure, but that is all I know at this point. I'll get into further detail with him before I try it on my mare and keep you posted.
