Are there any "human" antibiotics of which you are aware that, perhaps because of differences in species-specific metabolic functions, are contraindicated in equines?

Just like with humans every antibiotic has indications and contraindications for their use in horses. Not being familiar with human contraindications, I do not know if these are the same. We try to keep a list of commonly used antibiotics with a list or these indications and contraindications in Equine Medications and Nutriceuticals » Antibiotics and Antimicrobials. DrO

Thanks. I did read the article and it was very enlightening. There are some classes of antibiotics/antifungals we use in humans that I have not seen mentioned in your article (perhaps I just missed it) such as azithromycin, clavulanate, fluconazole, ketaconazole. I was just curious if there are any of which you are aware that should not be used at all in equines just as you should not feed your horse onions or your dog chocolate. Leslie

Most of those you list are used also in equine medicine, just run a search on the site on those of interest to you. One of the real cautions is the "wallet precaution": Once the antibiotic cost more than the horse excessive use may be detrimental to your bank account. DrO
