Discussion on Sedation, or local and USDF/USEF competing 18 days later | |

Posted on Wednesday, Apr 25, 2007 - 9:46 am: Well Sir it's that time of year to have Demetrius melanoma's checked and there will be a few that need to be frozen at the vet's office. The OTC stuff wont work for a 5mm one I found on his inner thigh and one proximal but cranial (I think that's what you say for horses when it's towards the head) to the sheath, which may be frozen or excised. This vet will probably elect to sedate him but we are riding in a USDF and USEF competition 18 days later. Do you think the sedation (I am sure he will use what you all typically use and excuse my ignorance on that) will be out of his system by then, to include any local like lidocaine? The USEF rules say seven days should be enough time (they are not fun to interpret) but you never know and we were drug tested at the last show. The rule list which I have gone over and over doesn't help much as they say there are 1000s of prohibited drugs not listed (even contacted USEF about Yucca in my Grand Meadows multi vit...which is fine by the way). Obviously you won't know which sedation he will use but is there any that you use that won't be out of his system by 18 days? Thanks, Corinne |

Posted on Thursday, Apr 26, 2007 - 12:27 am: Hi Corinne,I've done some drug testing for the USEF over the past 3 years, but I still don't really know exactly what they test for and all the withdrawl times, dosing limits, etc that owners have to worry about. My only involvement is the actual collection of samples at shows, etc--these go in a big cooler and on a fedex truck, and that's the end of the line for me. I do know, however, that there are forms available in the show office (at all shows) that you can declare medications that have been administered to your horse under vet supervision for verifiable medical purposes. I really don't think that you have anything to worry about, the show date being several weeks before the competition. However, the easiest thing would be to have your vet write a short note to the show stewards that details the procedure and the drugs that were used, and in what amounts. Be sure to bring the name and address with you to your appt, or even a stamped envelope that is ready to mail. Having the vet write the letter while you wait ensures that it gets done on time. No big deal. Good luck! |

Filling out the form might be considered a bit of overkill after 18 days but it would help protect you in case of problems. DrO |

Posted on Thursday, Apr 26, 2007 - 10:18 am: Thanks everyone! I would not have even checked had he not been tested last week and I wanted to varify that something in his multi vit was safe then I stumbled on the vet sedation administration portion or the rules and just want to ensure we are not disqualifed. These shows are far to expensive for us and we work so hard to be put out by something like routine vet work. This is all a first for me so I appreciate the information. By the way when he was tested I told the collector you will have no problem getting the blood but the pee, another story, he rarely DrOps his sheath in front of others and since I sometimes clean it when it's DrOpped you can look at it and he sucks his penis back up because he thinks he is going to get a sheath cleaning. LOL. I went to change and when I came back the collector said he DrOpped we almost got it...and i replied and then you looked at it didn't you? I bet if she looked at his face he would have peed. LOL |

Posted on Monday, Aug 23, 2010 - 5:44 pm: Welcome to Horseadvice Neel,I believe we can help you with your question but let me get you started off right so you can get the best answer as quick as possible. You will get more responses if you start your own discussion rather than post at the bottom on another member's discussion. Each discussion is "owned" by the original poster and all replies in that discussion should either directly or indirectly address the concerns of the original poster. We do have a better article covering your topic where you can start your discussion. You will find it at HorseAdvice.com » Treatments and Medications for Horses » Miscellaneous Drugs » Anabolic Steroids: Equipoise, Winstrol, and others. This will be a Article Page on this topic. Below the article you will find a list of already existing discussions on this topic. Under this list you will find the "Start New Discussion" button. You should first review the article as it will have important information on your subject. Next check the titles of the already existing discussions to see if your question has already been answered. If your question remains unanswered, now is the time to Start a New Discussion. Select a short title that describes your specific concern. A title like "Help!!!" does not help others find your specific topic. Instead something like "Ace for Colic?" allows others to rapidly find and understand what your topic is about just by viewing the title. This is likely to bring more responses from those with some experience with your topic and allows members to find answers to their questions quicker. |

Posted on Monday, Aug 30, 2010 - 9:15 pm: Neel,Welcome to HA! First, please do not type in capital letters, it is considered shouting. Second, Dr. O explained the procedure for starting your own discussion. You will get more responses that way. You have two new topics under someone else's question. You need to go back to the original article you need information on and then go down to the bottom of the page where it says "Start a new discussion" Also, if you can give us a little more information in your new discussion, there are a lot of us out here that would be able to help. Right now, all I know is first you wanted withdrawal times, but you do not say for what activity and then you want to know how to increase red blood cells in a race horse. Go repost your questions in the right place with a little bit of history and all of us will help you out. Rachelle |
