Well Sir it's that time of year to have Demetrius melanoma's checked and there will be a few that need to be frozen at the vet's office. The OTC stuff wont work for a 5mm one I found on his inner thigh and one proximal but cranial (I think that's what you say for horses when it's towards the head) to the sheath, which may be frozen or excised. This vet will probably elect to sedate him but we are riding in a USDF and USEF competition 18 days later. Do you think the sedation (I am sure he will use what you all typically use and excuse my ignorance on that) will be out of his system by then, to include any local like lidocaine? The USEF rules say seven days should be enough time (they are not fun to interpret) but you never know and we were drug tested at the last show. The rule list which I have gone over and over doesn't help much as they say there are 1000s of prohibited drugs not listed (even contacted USEF about Yucca in my Grand Meadows multi vit...which is fine by the way). Obviously you won't know which sedation he will use but is there any that you use that won't be out of his system by 18 days?

Thanks,
Corinne

Hi Corinne,

I've done some drug testing for the USEF over the past 3 years, but I still don't really know exactly what they test for and all the withdrawl times, dosing limits, etc that owners have to worry about. My only involvement is the actual collection of samples at shows, etc--these go in a big cooler and on a fedex truck, and that's the end of the line for me.

I do know, however, that there are forms available in the show office (at all shows) that you can declare medications that have been administered to your horse under vet supervision for verifiable medical purposes. I really don't think that you have anything to worry about, the show date being several weeks before the competition.

However, the easiest thing would be to have your vet write a short note to the show stewards that details the procedure and the drugs that were used, and in what amounts. Be sure to bring the name and address with you to your appt, or even a stamped envelope that is ready to mail. Having the vet write the letter while you wait ensures that it gets done on time. No big deal.

Good luck!

Hello Corinne,
I agree, assuming usual products, you should be fine after all the 7 day period has substantial safety built into it. Filling out the form might be considered a bit of overkill after 18 days but it would help protect you in case of problems.

Thanks everyone! I would not have even checked had he not been tested last week and I wanted to varify that something in his multi vit was safe then I stumbled on the vet sedation administration portion or the rules and just want to ensure we are not disqualifed. These shows are far to expensive for us and we work so hard to be put out by something like routine vet work. This is all a first for me so I appreciate the information. By the way when he was tested I told the collector you will have no problem getting the blood but the pee, another story, he rarely drops his sheath in front of others and since I sometimes clean it when it's dropped you can look at it and he sucks his penis back up because he thinks he is going to get a sheath cleaning. LOL. I went to change and when I came back the collector said he dropped we almost got it...and i replied and then you looked at it didn't you? I bet if she looked at his face he would have peed. LOL
