Dr. O, I have read all through this forum, and done extensive research on my own regarding spaying mares, but have found no mention of giving hormone replacements following surgery. I have a mare that I purchased 3 springs ago. She veted out fine prior to purchase. As soon as I got her home (mid April) she started to kick in her stall, and pin her ears. She would also act weird when she was ridden. This would last until July then she would get better until the fall then would start up again until the end of November. This year she was very painful also. The regumate worked well only in high doses. She is 1368#, and needed 25cc of regumate per day. When trying to wean her off in june after 4 days of only 20cc she would start ovulating again. So the decision seemed obvious that she would be much happier if her ovaries were removed. The surgery went well, and her disposition changed tremendously. Now the problem is she was moved to a training barn, and has started to kick in her stall again. I have noticed that she kicks when she looks through the stall to the horses on either side of her. She has never been to happy when she could see through the cracks in her stall. The previous barn she was at she had no horses beside her. Anyway... the trainer mentioned to a Vet that was at the barn that my mare had just been spayed, and she is kicking. The vet wants to do blood work, because he thinks that she needs hormones. She has since been moved to a stall in another isle with no horses next to her, and has quit kicking. What do you think? I hate to waste money on something that she doesn't need, and I also do not want her poked any more than necessary. Thank You, Leslie

Which hormones does he want to check and which hormones does he think needs replacing?

It seems obvious to me that the mare has a aggressive streak and spaying did not remove all those tendencies. I the kicking is the only problem why not try to block her view, it is cheap and easy.
