I had a pre-purchase drug screen done. It came back positive for fluphenazine. Do they normally screen for this? If so, how long has it been part of the standard drug screeing? Is it legal at shows? Can anybody get this or do you need a vet's prescription? Thanks

Prolixin (fluphenazine) is forbidden by USA Equestrian Rules. It should not be administered during the 45 days prior to competing.

Definately prescription and considering its potential for abuse in a prepurchase atmosphere yes should be screened for when caution is high. I am unsure what a standard screen is and probably varies from company to company.

Even if flupehazine is illegal by the USA Equestrian rules, when they do random blood work are they always looking for it? I lucked out because the lab that did the blood work happened to test for it, thankfully. The horse has been returned.

I am uncertain how often they look for this drug but as long as you follow the recommendations above you are probably safe.

Should this drug be given to a mare you are trying to get in foal and if it was given, could there be a chance of multiple heart defects.

Welcome Janie,
No drug should be given to any horse unless on balance the benefits outweigh the risks. The risk of a one time administration of fluphenazine at "Usual dosages" before breeding appears to be low as there are no reports of fluphenazine induced congenital defects in horses in the literature but then again there have been no toxicological experiments.

Experimentally fluphenazine has been shown to have teratogenic effects in mice when given at relatively high doses over a large percentage of gestation. There was decreased size, weight, and enlargement of the cerebral ventricles.
