Dr. O,

After a discussion with one of my vets, I did some research and came across a site on which I wanted your opinion, if that's possible. Can you look up Craig T Roberts, DVM and specifically see his thoughts on joint maintenance, Adequan and Legend?

In the article, he talks about using Legend every 48 hours at shows for an anti-inflamatory, and using Adequan only, for maintenance (as opposed to the routine monthly Legend shots that I have given for therapeutic purposes.)I know that Legend is routinely given but he thinks that it is "like taking the joint out for a nice dinner" and is gone too quickly for it to be of long term benefit. I have to admit that I have started using Adequan every four days (we are in the 6th week) and have noted improvement in the canter.

Thanks in advance!
Kerry

Hello Kerry,
Though some of Dr. Roberts statements are consistant with preliminary research, like hyaluronic acid appears to have at least part of its action at the level of the synovial membrane, his conclusions overstate what is known from scientific research about both the commercial injectable and oral treatments. The pharmocodynamics (how the drugs are distributed in the body) and the pharmocology (how the drugs work) remain uncertain, particularly in the long term use.

We have theories and conjecture on this but these remain to be elucidated. We have in vitro and in vivo studies that show positive effects, but these are frequently done with noncomercial products and used in a manner that is different than we use it clinically in the field. We also have clinical studies with commercially available products that indicate positive effects but we remain uncertain as to duration or even the exact mechanism of action. What we do know about these is presented in the article » Equine Medications and Nutriceuticals » Anti-inflammatories: NSAID's, Steroids, and Arthritis Treatment » The Joint Protective Treatments.

Gotcha. So nothing new there, really. Darn.
Thanks so much DrO, for checking that out for me!

After a flurry of research last decade there seems to be a real slow down in published work on this stuff. It could be once the companys got just enough research to keeping their products selling, there is no sense in stirring the pot further.
