Currently there is a discussion going on in another webgroup concerning double dosing horses with Ivermectin. Is there any new information concerning using this product in this way? Is it safe? My vet says he does not recommend it as he is concerned with it causing CNS problems in the horse.

The question is why would you want to do this other than perhaps in foals? I don't know of any work to suggest that this would increase efficacy although it would not surprise me if it did. But I don't think we are likely to find this cost effective as it is nearly 100% effective at the current dosage regimen in adult horses. Would it extend out the time till eggs reappeared in the stools? Possibly but I doubt it would double it. Might it make up for the results of bad dosing (underestimating weight or not getting it all in), absolutely!

i am confused about this. i thought there was new research now that showed that if you have a horse say that is a new horse for you and that the horse appears to be have worms, such as lots of broken tail hairs at his dock, thin, etc, that it would be good to worm each month for 3 months with ivermection. is that not true? and is ivermectin the choice for this?

Hmm..

I think that is is better to worm a horse slowly, overtime, and not necessarily with ivermectin - some of the worms do not respond well to ivermectin if at all (overtime they get less susceptible, alike bacteria)... and besides if you worm a horse abruptly, and if there are too many worms infesting its intestines etc. then you might accidentally colic the horse or cause other damage.

Jeri, as you don't state specifically what you find confusing (product? timing? previous history of the horse?) I am unsure what specifically to address. However the deworming schedule you suggest is not the one we would recommend for horses with parasites. For our schedule see, Horse Care ยป Worms, Deworming & Parasite Control. The Overview article explains the rationale while the Schedule article gives specific deworming schedules based on age, exposure, etc..
