being in a rush and not wearing my glasses I purchased penicillin G Benzathine & penicillin G Procaine, for use in beef cattle only, and not to be given intramuscularly, i have given it to two of my horses in the muscle! what will happen and what do i need to do? please help. I was embaressed to call my own vet.I gave each of them 35 cc. HELP |

To be perfectly honest, if I had injected my horses with something that might not have been correct, I would put my embarrassment aside & get on the phone to the vet pronto! |

I didnt need any advice like that, i just needed to know what to do. Thanks anyway, I should have know that someone would have to give me a hard time, I just told my husband that someone would say something negative thanks for stepping up to the plate. |

I wasn't being negative or giving you a hard time; but geesh, re-read your post.
You injected your horses intramuscularly with a product that not only wasn't supposed to be injected intramuscularly, but was for beef cattle, not horses. Then you add that you're too embarrassed to phone your own vet to find out if anything bad will happen, & end with HELP!
My advice still stands - put aside your embarrassment, phone your vet, & ask him/her. What if the effects of what you have done are serious? You plan to wait & act upon advice from an internet site?
If anything needs to be done post-injection, your vet is the most likely person to consult to do it. Lighten up. As far as my being the first to "step up to the plate" with advice that is clearly common sense, all I can say is "You're welcome." |

Bonita is right, Leeanne, but remember that you're not the only one to ever screw up. Forget the embarassment and make the call - the agony you put yourself through right now will end, and be worth any sheepishness you might feel. Believe me, your vet has heard it all.......I have no doubt that Dr.O could relate many incredible tales that would blow your's out of the water - he's just too polite to do it. |

And just as an example of "inter-species" problems: A couple of years ago here, a local breeding farm, who always had their feed custom-mixed by the local Farmer's Co-Op, received a feed delivery, & 12 hours later several of the farm's horses - including stallions - died.
It turns out that the "custom-mixed" feed was accidentally sent thru a mill that was used for cattle feed, & apparently some substance/supplement used in the cattle feed, turned out to be a potentially fatal substance for horses.
The farm owner initially won a HUGE lawsuit against the Co-Op, but of course, appeals are pending. The Co-Op claims (ahem, ahem), that 5-6 horses could have coliced & died for "any reason", not just the fact that they "ALONE" had just been given the new feed.
Don't just assume that because something is suitable for cattle, that it's safe for horses.

Well actually Leanne, I am uncertain why the label reads like it does and you should certainly discontinue its use. There are combination products like this available for horses and they are supposed to be injected IM. We do not recommend their use (see article on Penicillin as to why) but I suspect other than a little soreness for a few days your horses will be fine as long as you don't get it in a vein and they do not have an allergic reaction.
