Dr. O:
I was wondering if you could tell me how long ketoprofen is effective for inflammation/pain control once it is administered. Also, how often can it be given? I have been administering ketoprofen 1mg/kg ivp once a day for the past 3 days for a soft tissue injury. Thanks!!!!

Hello Signe,
The recommended doseage regimen is in the article associated with this forum, Equine Medications and Nutriceuticals » Anti-inflammatories: NSAID's, Steroids, and Arthritis Treatment » Ketoprofen but there is also more information at Equine Medications and Nutriceuticals » Anti-inflammatories: NSAID's, Steroids, and Arthritis Treatment » An Overview of NSAID's. Though the half life, discussed in the articles, is fairly short this is really not the same as how long you might get pain relief and this will vary from case to case depending on the severity and source of the pain.

Really the question is if using our guidelines are you getting relief? If not perhaps higher doses or another NSAID is warranted. Higher doses or the sequential use of several NSAIDs should only be used under the supervision of a veterinarian.
