EQUIOXX is an oral paste produced by Merial containing firocoxib, a coxib class of non-narcotic, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Coxib class is a term for what has been called cyclooxygenase-inhibiting or COX-2 inhibitors. This class of NSAID's is thought to be safer than earlier NSAID's because of lower risk of GI irritation. EQUIOXX has been approved for use in horses by the FDA and is now sold in the USA. This article discusses the dosage, efficacy, safety, cost, and use of firocoxib and compares it with phenylbutazone use in the horse. I'd asked my vet about using this product, as Contessa is currently on 2g bute/day for her DJD. He thought it would be something worth trying, so I immediately began searching for a source. Sadly, this stuff looks extremely cost prohibitive for long term use. Packaged by the tube, it looks like the cheapest I'd get it for is around $8/day. So much for that!

Thank you Dawn, it was the one piece of information we were missing.

I actually called the manufacturer this morning to ask if they were planning on creating a long-term form of Equioxx, as it's only intended for use up to 14 days in paste form.
As of now they haven't made any decisions, but are eager to hear from potential users of a powder form. I suspect that the more people call the quicker we can see a seemingly safer alternative to bute therapy. If you feel so inclined, the number is: 1-888-637-4251

I would like to point out Dawn that bute is considered a safe therapy when used according to instructions. Despite tens of thousands of administrations occasionally with very high doses or administered over a very long time, in the last 25 years I have never had a serious adverse reaction and doubtful I have had many mild reactions. This is not a recommendation to use any drug indiscriminately.
