Dr. O., We just purchased an 18 month old TWH from a horse trader. He buys a lot of horses from auctions. Sometimes these horses have passed from one auction to another. A lot of these horses that he brings in have a respiratory infection or, if they don't - they do soon. His standard method of handling this is to give horses Liquamycin LA 200 intravenously for several days after they come into his barn. They often act dazed, gasp or sit down when he administers the injection. To me, this doesn't seem normal. The colt we bought was treated with Liquamycin LA 200 for a respiratory infection with the above symptoms (gasping, etc.) for several days. Is this a suitable drug to be giving to horses? Isn't the reaction to the shot an adverse reaction? Thanks for your help. Donna Myers

LA 200 (oxytetracycline) binds calcium. I suspect he is giving it so fast that the blood calcium is DrOpping and causing transient muscular weakness. Much faster and he might cause cardiac arrest. We use this drug IV in foals but it must be given slowly. For more see Equine Medications and Nutriceuticals » Antibiotics and Antimicrobials » Tetracycline and Oxytetracycline. DrO
