Discussion on Antihistamines for Vaccine Reaction?

I read on another forum that one person there uses an antihistamine shot for her horse that reacts to a vaccine and this prevents the soreness and reaction. Is this a valid thing to do? I am breeding my mare, and she reacts to vaccines. I wanted to avoid buting her, but my vet says preventing the reaction is more important than avoiding bute. If giving an antihistamine works, and it is not counterindicated for preganacy, that would be great! My gelding also reacts. Which antihistamine could I use?

I have not used antihistimines for this purpose nor is there any work on the effects of pregnancy in mares. I agree with your vet. Bute is very effective for this problem. It has a long history of being a safe medication when the directions are followed and though not labeled for pregnant mares has been used in them often without problems and the effects on the fetus studied more thoroughly than just about any other medication that I am aware of.
