Hi all & Dr.O,
I could not find my original posts on finding a way to help my mares with their lameness issues...so I hope it's OK if I just post this update.

I had both Toy Moon & Stately Morn on the complete series of Adequan, but to my great disappointment, it didn't seem to help them at all. I really thought this stuff would do the trick...guess it's another experience in spending a lot of money for nothing...but I had to try it.

Stately Morn seems to walk out on the pasture better than she does when she comes into the corral...softer ground?
Toy Moon is still dealing with her arthitic hocks and her right front leg...arthritus in the knee and her ankle is still just a bit swollen from whatever it was that broke thru her skin after the nerve blocking incident.

So, I am pretty much back to square one...we just don't know what in heck is going on.

So...my next plan of action is already being shipped to me...I went to Smart Pack and ordered MSM, Yucca S and Devil's Claw. I also have paste HA that I am giving them both orally for the next week...I am still deciding wether or not a quality HA supplement should be added to this mix...

So, I will post back again in a few weeks, after these supps have time to take effect...and I hope this will lessen the pain they seem to be in.
I don't know what else to do.

Thanks guys!!

Joanie, did you use the Adequan injected in the joint or the muscle?

Just remember , do not use Devil claw on a pregnant mare, or one you suspect might be pregnant. I believe is causes abortions.
Dr O, I didnt realize that Adequan had a joint injection protocal. I thought only Legend was designed to be injected into the bloodstream or into the affected joint.

Christine,

I know about the Devil's Claw and pregnant mares...it can cause abortion...my mares are retired from having foals, that is why I am going to start using it, and hope it helps.
Thanks, though...good advice!!

Hi Dr.O,

It was the IM Adequan that I used.
If you can remember, before I got the Adequan my vet nerve blocked both mares...both mares got swollen legs...right up to the knee. We blocked both front ankles on Stately Morn and both her legs got swollen. For Toy Moon he blocked her right front...besides the swelling, several days after the block she developed a sore on the back of that ankle...all the hair came off and after it softened up enough (I was applying a drawing ointment, then switched to an healing ointment)...I was able to apply enough pressure to push out some blood and quite a bit of pus...I gave her antibiotics too as we knew this was some sort of infection, no doubt from the blocking injection. The sore healed up and her hair grew back, it's been several weeks now and that ankle is still very slightly swollen...you have to know it's there to see it.
So...I have decided no more joint injections.

As soon as it arrives, I'll get both mares on the MSM, Devil's Claw and Yucca S....do you think adding oral HA would be beneficial?
Any other suggestions from you would be appreciated.

Thanks, Doc.

And what does the article say about IM Adequan? Concerning hyaluronate and treatment in general I would follow the recommendations in the Overview of Arthritis.

Dr.O,

Sorry, but we were into our malt barley harvest the last couple of weeks and had no time for the computer.
I appreciate your reply...
I read the articles again and then went thru some posts on Legend/Map5 ect...it just seems to me that nothing available to us for arthritic horses is 100% guarenteed...it's all pretty much try it and hope it works.
I was really disappointed with the Adequan IM. I am going to talk to my vet again about IV Map5 or Legend...
But, once I realized the Adequan wasn't going to help, I went online and got some supplements. I started adding them to the mare's senior feed about 8 days ago. They are getting: Pure Yucca S, Pure MSM, and B-L pellets which consist of Devil's Claw, Yucca, protein and vitamin B-12. I also have an HA supplement on the way.
I think both mares are doing better on these sups...I am very happy about that, needless to say...so I'll continue with these sups and report back again in a couple of weeks...

Thanks, Dr.O
