I just found out that a friend of mine started using Epsom Salts as a food additive as a "cheap calming agent." I'd never heard of this and decided to look it up on this site. After reading the article on magnesium toxicity https://www.horseadvice.com/sbs/articles/diseases/depression/magnesium.html I'm upset and will contact her immediately to find out how much she's been using. The article only discusses toxicity in relation to using a large amount for a short duration. Even if she is using a small amount (still to be determined), I'm thinking this would still be a huge problem. What do you think?

Small amounts should be safe but are unlikely to cause behavorial changes. Almost all nutrients become toxic when given in large enough doses and so it is with Mg. With Mg the key is that, as a salt, it is not absorbed well from the bowel making the horse tolerant of amounts that would otherwise be toxic. DrO
