I am trying to find out if Recovery EQ is an FDA approved drug. I believe it is a nutraceutical, but a prescription is needed to get it. Also, has anyone used this for joint health? If so, what were your results? I have an 11 year old gelding with arthritis in his knee. We have just finished a series of Legend and Adequan injections. At this point, I am looking to maintain him. |

I don't know if Recovery EQ is FDA approved or not. It is a neutraceutical, and while I do buy it through my local vet (I live in British Columbia), I've seen it advertised through a Lower Mainland (Vancouver) tack store as well. I've been using it for both my 20 year old Irish Sporthorse mare, who suffers from an old tendon injury, as well as my boarder, a 23 year old TB gelding, who has severe arthritis in his right knee (for which he gets a joint injection about every 3 months, plus IM Adequan every month)as well as other joint ailments. He was on Corta-Flx liquid previously, on which he did well. However, when I decided to put my mare on Recovery (after reading Horse Journal recommendations), I switched him to that too. Both horses have shown a positive response - with less general stiffness, improved energy etc. I also have friends who have been using this product (one on a miniature donkey with a stifle problem) with excellent results as well.

Has anyone used Recovery EQ on a Navicular horse? I have taken on a wonderful mare who is only 4, the xrays show 1st stage issues. She had gone through a year of poor hoof care so I hope I still have options to help her! Any suggestions are welcome.}}} Thanks Chris |

I am interested in this too. My 5-year old OTTB x-rayed in pre-purchase with "slightly abnormal" navicular change but not navicular. I've read he may never develop it but as a Low Hunter/EQ over fences horse, I want to protect him and keep him going as long as possible. I am having him shod with pads up front but would feed him supplements if I thought they would help as a preventative. I found one that costs about $600/year to feed. How much is Recovery and is it or anything else a good preventative?

I use Recovery EQ for one of my horses. He had 1st stages of navicular, also and was sooooooo stiff (arthritis). He is doing much better over the last year. Perfectly even in front. Of course,we also have him shod differently, so do not know if it is the new shoes over the last year, or the Recovery, since my farrier recommended it, and both started about the same time. I'll stick with it, though, just in case it is the Recovery, as my guy seems to be doing great. |

Roxanne, by now you probably have worked your knee problem out, but my thought was there is a somewhat new product out called SURPASS. I believe it works like a topical nsaid. I have used it for ringbone with some degree of success. The cost here in the northeast is $60 per tube. I am wondering if DrO knows anything about this and if it is an effective treatment if the arthritis is in the accute stage ie heat and swelling. |

Hello Judy,
We have often discussed SURPASS, though somewhat superficially. We have used it on several horses now and the impression is moderate improvement but that it does not touch bute used in regular doses. Better would be bute for the acute stage and SURPASS for the chronic stages, if it will achieve your goals. We have had some adverse reactions reported on these boards also. Run a search on SURPASS for more.
