Dr. O,
How long does Banamine remain at a therapeutic level after IV injection? In particular, in a colic patient? I suppose its effectiveness has a lot to do with the pain level and the cause of the colic, but say, for example, a mild to moderate medical colic - how long would you expect it to last?

Like you say, a lot depends on the particulars...Let's try this, see Equine Diseases » Colic and GI Diseases » Colic in Horses » First Aid for Colic. In this article we discuss treatment with Banamine in particular, responses to treatment, and what they mean. It covers some of the exceptions. If after reading this you still have questions post them there: perhaps the article will focus your question and I won't have to put out some number here that will not be accurate in all instances.

Thanks Dr. O, a review of that article makes my question somewhat of a mute point in the actual management of a medical colic!

Is the dose listed in that article incorrect? I think it says to give 500 mg per 100 lbs. The dose in the Banamine article appears to be correct.

By the way, I wrote praises about your website in our Northern Nevada Gaited Horse Club newsletter, which I now edit. Hopefully people will see the light and join up in droves now!

Thanks,
Cindy

Thanks for the kudos Cindy, we currently have over 3000 active members but could always use a few more! Baby always needs a new pair of shoes.

You are correct, that dose should be for a thousand pounds: you get a free month for finding this error. But I am not sure why you think Banamine is moot, it is the best treatment we have for medical colics.

Oh no, Dr. O, I think I miscommunicated my point - I didn't mean Banamine is moot! By golly I've seen it work wonders. Just meant that my question as to duration of effect is somewhat a moot point, or should I say, more of a an academic issue, if one uses your very helpful algorithm for handling a colic.

Thanks for the free month!

Cindy
