I was wondering Dr O if you would please review the current research regarding the use of oral HA and comment? I recently ran across the following article and it seems to point to some efficacy but I lack the knowledge to decipher it fully!

Hello Shelly,
For the latest word on HA as a nutraceutical including review of the article you reference above check out Treatments and Medications for Horses » Anti-inflammatories (NSAID's, Steroids, Arthritis Rx) » Glucosamine, Chondroitin Sulfate, and their use in Arthritis. Note, I do not know if this is coincidental but when I clicked on the above link, which is a valid link that takes you to an article, my anti-virus program went crazy so everyone be careful.

Sorry all, I'll have my husband check my computer tonight.

Dr O, I should have known you'd be up on the latest! Its just I keep on hearing that there's this new oral HA only recently available that's superior, but I can't seem to find anything further.... I'll have to ask my farrier again because he said its made a huge difference in the clients he sees.

Shelly, if there were a nutraceutical that really made a "huge" difference in cases of DJD it would be on the news 24/7. The fact of the matter is that we do not expect huge differences from these products. Subtle to moderate improvements are actually what is seen with these type products and not in every case I am afraid. Because the pain of DJD waxes and wanes in its severity it easy to confuse a natural waning period with a huge improvement of any recent therapy. I think realistic expectations is an important first step in evaluating these products and their value in your program to make your horse comfortable.
