My vet has my big (17hh) horse on the following protocol:
3g for 10 days
2g for 10 days
1g for 10 days

The horse's weight is estimated at 1400lbs.

Does this seem reasonable? The article makes it sound like a lot. The vet said this is a common protocol.

Hello Kayla,
The decision of what is reasonable for your horse must be made by your veterinarian and will depend on several different factors but if you will carefully read the second paragraph of the "What is a Safe Dose?" subtopic in the article and consider it is referring to a more average 1000lb horse while you have a 1400lb horse, I think you will get a good perspective of what historically has been shown to be safe for most horses.

DrO, that's exactly what concerns me. The recommended protocol is a much higher dosage of bute over a longer time period than what's in the article. :-(

My vet made it sound like his recommended protocol is both standard and common. (His recommendations on adequan loading also differ from this site...in that he's recommending a 7-10 day loading dose schedule.)

Regardless, my horse is obviously feeling better today. I cleaned his feet and for the first time in ages, he wasn't unhappy about it.

BTW, thank you so much for providing this site to us. While dealing with a medical problem, this is the very best thing I've found anywhere.

Kayla, thats for the kudos. It really is what the disease and medications sections were designed for: to evaluate the diagnosis and treatment your horse is receiving compared to what the latest scientific literature and my practical experience recommend, then have that reviewed by the thousands of members who can comment on their personal experience.

Your last comment makes me think you are still not reading carefully, the protocol you describe above, while higher than label dosages, is similar to the description in the article.

Kayla,
My horse is about 1600lbs+ When my horse fell and busted his knees open he was on bute as follows:

2gms am / 2gms pm for 7 days
1gm am / 1 gm pm for 7 days
1gm 1xday for 7 days

Like Dr. O said the article is for an average 1000lb horse, your horse is bigger than that, probably requiring more medication.

Thank you for sharing that Melissa. My horse is quite obviously feeling very well. But I guess the real test is when he's off the bute and we get to see if the adequan is working.
