Hi Dr O and all, My gelding underwent front left annular ligament resection with tendon splitting (of basically the entire SDF) on March 5. His recovery has been pretty ideal - we're currently hand walking 25 minutes daily, working toward a goal of 30 minutes daily. After being discharged he was on 2g Bute/day, reduced to 1 gram after the second week. My instructions were to try to wean him off of the Bute, but to bump him back to 1 gram if necessary. I reduced his Bute to 0.5 grams daily 4 days ago. His level of soundness has not changed (he's sound at the walk is all I know for sure!) and he seems comfortable. It seems to me, though, there is more heat in his leg on this reduced dose. (The lower dose is the only change I can identify in his circumstances.) Should I continue at 0.5g/day with the objective of his eventually being Bute-free or is the 1g/day a better regimen for now? Thank you! |

This is a question for your surgeon Natalie but from the information provided this would not be a sign to go back up to me. Increased swelling and/or lameness would be clearer indications. DrO |
