Hello. My horse has been on dex powder orally for about a two months. We have been tapering his dose from every other day to every 3 days etc. I have now noticed patches of hair loss throughout his body. I know it is shedding season etc.. but this is down the the skin. Could this be associated with the dex use??

Steroids have the effect of causing hair retention so though not common it could be the steroids caused some retention of the winter coat and slowed the onset of summer coat and now as the horse comes off the hair is being shed in patches. Sometimes you normally get patchy shedding patterns where hair is loss before new hair comes in and the most important thing in ruling in or out a problem is whether the skin underneath appears healthy for more on this see Diseases of Horses » Skin Diseases, Wounds, and Swellings » Hair and Coat Problems / Itching / Irritated Skin » Overview of Hair Loss & Irritated Skin.
