Hello Dr. O,
Quick question. My mare was put on regumate for the competion season. She had been on it for approx. 3 to 4 weeks when she showed signs of acute pain over her loins. Her trainer called his vet and he sent something over for her and she is already improving. I heard something like they thought an egg was retained and turned into a cyst. Does this sound reasonable?

Hello SCH,
There are types of ovarian cysts, and there are normal cystic structures, that can cause hormonal changes that makes mares act marish. One common symptom is they don't like being messed with about the loins and flank, so there is a "reasonable story" here but I cannot say if this is what is happening to your horse.
