Hi all, I need some advice and/or opinions regarding Trihist. My horse has a constant allergy drainage from her eyes, not infected, eye looks perfectly fine. My vet said the only thing to try is Trihist. Has anyone had any adverse affects from this? Has anyone used it for eye allergy? Thanks for any advice/opinions.

Has the vet flushed the tear ducts? Through the opening in the nasal passage? I might be inclined to try that, before medication, just in case there is a blockage in the duct.

Thanks Lee, No that has not been done. A couple weeks ago when we had lots of rain, her eyes stopped draining, so I think it's allergy related, but I will inquire further with the vet.
Many thanks,

My horse had allergies. Mainly sneezing and head bobbing (I think his nose itches or sinus pain?). I was given TriHist granules to use. I think it helped a little, when his symptoms were mild. I think they are bitter though as he wasn't too pleased when I put it in with his grain.

I have since moved to a neighboring state, and he rarely sneezes or head shakes (only a few nods this year). I hope the allergans stay away from here!

Hello Shirley,
From the information you provide I agree that it remains uncertain that allergies are the cause of your horse's tearing and fly irritation is the most common reason I see followed by blocked tear ducts.

But back to your question about Tri-Hist Shirley. We have information on antihistamine use in horses at Diseases of Horses » Skin Diseases, Wounds, and Swellings » Hair and Coat Problems / Itching / Irritated Skin » Overview of Pruritus: Scratching & Rubbing. Check the generic drug name in the Tri-Hist and compare against those we do and don't recommend.

Thank You Dr. O, After much reading and thinking, I made an appointment for my vet to come out next week and check the tear ducts. Appreciate your advice and this wonderful group.
