Hello Dr. O,

Yesterday, through an unusual series of events, I was left unsure if my horse had received the correct (sufficient) dose of Ivermectin. He either got a correct dosage OR a very insufficient one (250 lbs total). I really have NO idea which, and it is impossible to figure out at this point. And yes – I’m kicking myself for such a stupid error!

The horse is a large (est. 1400 lbs) draft-cross gelding, 17 yrs old, on a regular worming schedule.

Can you advise? I want to make sure he is protected, but I don’t want to do harm in administering too much if he got the proper does first time. All other horses (about 30) at were wormed yesterday, and I also want to make sure my horse doesn’t mess it up for the herd protection.

Thanks – and in future I will be more careful!
Mary

Hello MaryS,
The article explains about the toxicity of the product and will give you direction as to when it is safe to repeat deworming. Look under the toxicity heading (hint: in toxicity studies horses receiving much larger doses than a 2X dose did not have problems).

Mary

I once accidentally overdosed a foal 2 x with ivermectin and it showed no ill-effects.

Like you I kicked myself, and then rushed to this forum when I found what I had done. I was so relieved to find it wasn't about to turn its toes up... It certainly makes you more careful in future.

I would wait a couple of weeks and then dose him again. Or, you could take a fecal sample and see what it shows before you dose again. They have done tests where they have triple dosed horses and they don't have any ill effects. Don't worry. It can happen to anyone, especially when you are doing that many horses.

Hello all,
Thanks for advice. I will redo his worming this evening ...he'll just love that, poor boy.

Dr. O - In my too-quick glance of the article I was mistakenly thinking the dose range between 1.8 mg/kg (no symptoms) and 2.0 mg/kg (symptoms) was my margin for error ... not fully realizing that 1.8 mg/kg was a nine-times overdose - that's a lot over!

OK - time to slow down ...Read more carefully (the articles are VERY informative), and administer worming med much more carefully!

I've said before, but want to again - you've compiled a great resource here!

Thanks,
Mary
