Hi Dr. O. Do you know if the human preparation dexamethasone acetate LA(8mg/1ml) can be used for equine heaves, either IM, or using the IM preparation PO? Thank you, Stacy

Hello Stacy,
I am unfamiliar with this particular salt of dexamethasone and so uncertain. Checking many references in veterinary medical pharmacology texts I cannot find where this formulation is discussed. The particular salt of a glucocorticoid does effect absorption rates but I cannot say whether this formulation could be used in horses and what to expect with its use.

Thanks for the effort Dr. O, I will certainly not be using the LA preparation given the lack of equine data. We were lucky enough to acquire a Christmas pony for the kids to start riding, but he does have heaves and I found myself without Dex the day I posted. I will continue to use the Dex SP - had good results when used PO as you suggested in the article. Thanks again for this site. I had complete confidence we could have the pony safely here after reading all the articles and related discussions. Stacy
