Hello,
Does anyone know if a prescription for bute written by a vet in Europe would be valid to buy bute in America, like from KV Vet Supply? Bute is considerably less expensive in America and I would like to bring it back with my when I return from visiting my family.

Thank you all!

A good question Danita which I don't really know. Call the pharmacy you are thinking of ordering from and ask. Oh and let us know what they say.

Well I found out the prescription needs to be written by a US vet. Any suggestions on how to get a prescription since I have no affiliation with a vet in the US?
Thank you all

Maybe the vet in Europe knows a colleague in the US?

Do the friends/family you are visiting have equine vets? I'd think about having them request a bottle and buying it off the friend or family member. Where in the US are you visiting Danita?

Something else to think about 'tho: would customs allow you to leave the US/enter Italy with the bute? (I know you could always stuff it deep in a suitcase in the hopes that it is not found). Certainly you can travel across borders with neccessary human meds, but I wonder about the legality of crossing borders w/ animals meds?

Danita, KV Vet supplies is who I use as well, and when I was on missions trip to Kenya, they shipped there, but was expensive. You will find that most online stores will accept foreign prescriptions if the prescriber can be verified, or they are a member themselves.

You can also go to the US State Departments Website to find out what you can bring into other countries. Usually, unless it is an animal or agricultural product, it can be brought, but you will have to pay an import fee, which again depends on the country. Another idea would be to call your countries embassy here in the US and find out.

Last idea is do a Google Search of Vet Supplies, and go from there. Like I said before, they will ship anywhere, but the cost of shipping might outweigh the savings. Bute is not a schedule 3 controlled substance I don't think, so it may be easier than you think. I know you can take medical items to Canada and Mexico without paying import fees if it is under a certain amount.

Hope this helps-out of all of the ideas, contacting your Embassy is probably best bet, and their number can be found on the State Departments Web Site. It is www.state.gov.

Good Luck!
