Hi Dr. O.

I am trying to find out what the detection limits are for drug testing of prednisolone. I read in one of your articles that it was 24 hours, and then in another website that it is 48 hours. We have a horse with COPD - and is going to Regional championship competition. Thanks for anything you can tell us!!
Sue.

Susan, drug detection and amounts that might result in a positive are not something easily kept up with. In the 90's radioimmunoassay was able to detect prednisolone metabolites for 48 hours after administration. But not only is the testing constantly evolving and becoming more sensitive but the laboratories tend to keep such information secret. A relatively recent advancement is accepting specific minimum levels as ability to detect tiny amounts has occurred.

As a result of all this no one really knows for sure what might be a "for sure" safe amount and chronic usage can result in longer clearance times compared to a single one time dose. And that is the way the testing labs want it. It would not surprise me if prednisolone or its related metabolites could be detected for many days.

All things considered I would use the longest possible time you think will reasonably control your horse's condition but allow showing.

Hi Sue,

The FEI guidelines are usually available at the USEF website, and they are very specific. Probably there is an equivalent authority and resource for Canadian shows. I typically use these guidelines as a maximum, and try to come in well under, in case my horse clears a drug more slowly. I also stay in touch with my veterinarian, so that she can vouch for my attempt to comply with the regulations, in the event of a positive (I would still obviously be banned from showing for a period of time, but there's sometimes some leeway for an honest mistake).

FWIW, my horse has been selected for drug testing, and has passed with this approach.

Thanks Dr. O and Elk for your information. It has clarified what I need to know. If my daughter and her horse do well, and a drug test is required, I am sure we are in the clear, as we started/completed treatment when symptoms started about 2 weeks ago, and finished 5 days ago - altogether a total of 10 days. I've tried to find specifics of detection on different websites that govern the events (Arabian Horse Association for one). I will email them and find out what their regulations state with regard to Prednisolone, and then follow your advice!! Thanks again!

Sue.
