Should clarify - liquid bute taken orally, in cc's or ml's.

Hi Tamara. I have never heard of using IV bute orally(I THINK I have read before that it can burn the mouth)...I have heard of and used IV banamine orally. Did your vet say you could give it orally?

Isn't there instructions on the bottle?

I had never heard of it either.. it is strawberry flavoured bute liquid, to be given by the mouth... the initial instructions were 10cc 2x day then half then half but I wasn't sure what that was in powder. Strange n'est pas?

OH I'm pretty sure 10mls equal 2 grams of bute.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, the equivalent dose would depend on the concentration of the liquid, until that is known so an appropriate dose can be calculated you should not use the product. Most injectable products are 200 mg to the ml (10 ml equals 2 gms) but this product does not sound like any injectable I have seen.

Dr.O. I think you misunderstood, as I did at first. She knows she is to give 10mls of the liquid, just wanted to know what the equivalent in powder would be.

Strawberry flavoured is what gave me a pause... A. I figured it must not be a standard injectible but hadn't really seen oral liquid before and B. I just haven't seen much strawberry flavoured horse stuff out there. Apple, molasses, alfalfa, whatever... but I thought strawberry was for people!

Oh, and the bottle states 100mg/ml I believe which makes it half the strength as the injectible liquid and 10ml would = 1g unless I can't add. Which is possible and maybe even probable under the stress of yet another laminitis episode combined with 7.5 months of pregnancy....

Diane, to calculate the equivalent dose in powder would require knowing the concentration of the fluid.
