Hello,
I'm still wrestling with finding a management program for my horse that has severe osteoarthiritis in his stifles. He is currently on surpass applied 2x a day to his stifles. I discontinued bute (due to ulcers) and equioxx (too expensive). I'm considering to start back on something else but not sure which. I'm considering recovery eq as the testimonials are astounding it seems. I did a nuclear scan on my horse in Nov 08, and he showed slight arthiritis in other areas. He walks around the paddock at times slowly and stiffly and his weight is down (975lbs for 16 hand horse) Vet says he should be around 1000 or little more. I'm assuming his weight is associated with pain possibly.
What should I start on for a pain management/anti-inflammatory schedule- taking in consideration my horse has had ulcers in the past. Looking for a supplement that will provide a little extra relief for him, and that will not raise pH level. He had ulcers while on bute- so I that is out of question.

Danielle, some people have had success using the dog version of equioxx...previcox I believe it is called. If you look under the header on Equioxx you will find some discussion about it...much cheaper then equioxx.

Hello Danielle,
I second DianEs post above about less expensive forms of firocoxib.

We give a complete management regimen for degenerative joint disease at Diseases of Horses » Lameness » Joint, Bone, Ligament Diseases » Arthritis and DJD: An Overview. There are some ideas in there that may help you. I would note that stifle DJD is often do to an underlying defect or instability of the joint. Many of these horses will remarkably worsen with exercise in spite of medication used. Be sure to watch your horse carefully for signs of what type exercise levels worsen the disease and avoid those situations.
