I have a 15-16 year old mare with Cushings. She has excessive hair and hoof growth and increased urination. With recent wet weather she is now prone to hoof abcesses. She has been confined to a dry stall for 4 days with the recent abcess rupturing on the heel bulb. I gave her penicillin injections each day. Is it possible to put some form of antibiotic like tetracycline in her water daily to help ward off future infections?

Welcome Ann, No, there are not antibiotics that can be used in the fashion you suggest above and if there were they probably would not prevent abscesses, just create abscesses that are not sensitive to your prophylactic antibiotic. To learn more about how hoof abscesses form and ways to reduce their incidence see, HorseAdvice.com » Diseases of Horses » Lameness » Diseases of the Hoof » Hoof Abscesses, Bruises, and Gravels. DrO

Is your mare on pergolide or prascend, and a low starch feed? I was just reading that if the medicine dosage is too low, a Cushing's horse can be prone to more abscesses. If that isn't accurate, I know Dr. O. can correct me.
