Hi I have one horse that I event who gets very stressed when he is competing. I backed him and he is now 9yrs. He has always been very stressed. From the moment I bring his bandages out until I get home he is stressed. He is perfect at home, however at an event he is very tense and strong in his dressage, I am unable to do a practise fence SJ and he is incredibly strong XC. Again, I cannot warm him up. I tried changing his feed / lunging / steady up / stay calm etc. Despite how difficult he is - he still has 19 BE points ( In 2 Seasons ) 4 Weeks ago, I put him on Nupafeed. It seems to work amazingly well. He is just like a normal horse, in fact exactly the same as he is at home. I can warm him up, do the practise jump etc. I have used it when Show Jumping and also at two day events. I have not yet given hime a booster before the XC. Is magnesium known to have any side effects ? How does it work ? The only thing that slighlty worries me is he almost appears doped. His behaviour is very different. He will stand dozing, he will eat and drink at an event etc. Has anybody else used Nupafeed or anything similar ? |

Hi Shelley, I haven't used Nupafeed or ever heard of it, but I have used up to 10 grams of magnisum with my horse(used a product called Quiessence-I used the mag to help with his muscles) and it helped. Also, there is a product called APF http://www.auburnlabs.com/ that helps to regulate cortosol levels (which are increased when a horse is stressed). There isn't any research really but it appears to have helped my horse. His stress would cause him to tie up. Good luck, Kim |

We have 2 articles on magnesium in horses Sarah, see: 1) Care for Horses » Nutrition » Minerals and Nutrition. 2) Equine Diseases » Nervous System » Incoordination, Weakness, Spasticity, Tremors » Epsom Salts and Magnesium Toxicity. There are also many discussions on the use of magnesium Shelly. Run a search for others discussions. Concerning APF and as Kim states, I can find no research to support their claims. DrO |
