Posted on Friday, Nov 12, 1999 - 11:48 pm: Does anyone have any suggestions for purchasing prescription drugs for horses. My vet is happy to give me a prescription if I can find a more economical place to buy pergolide(Permax) for a horse with Equine Cushiod (cushings) He was suggesting 1 ml tablet a day. Any ideas? ThanksTrenna |

Posted on Saturday, Nov 13, 1999 - 10:11 pm: Trenna, my wife and I just went through this with a Cimetidine(Tagamet) prescription. I was astounded by the variation in prices from liquid to tablet across the US. The variation I saw wasa high of $836 for Liquid Tagamet to $198 for the generic liquid. For tablets the variation was even worse ... from a high of $347 for Tagamet to $58 for generic tablets in the US. Canadian drugs are regulated and are fairly consistant from location to location(shipping and dispensing vary). The prices in Canada were $150 US for Tagamet liquid and $30 for generic tablets. Some drugs are not available by mail order(US or Canada) ... sedatives, narcotics etc. But, anyone can order those that are available mail order from Canada. Log into www.canadarx.net and ask for a quote. They will provide instructions for ordering. Usually your vet can just fax the Prescription to them, you pay and they'll mail the prescription out. If you pay on-line via a charge card make sure the transaction is a secure transaction. We haven't ordered from them yet but I expect to place an order in the next week or two. They were very helpful providing instructions, shipping time and even a pointer to a currency exchange rate calculator ... Remember they quote in Canadian dollars($1.00 Canadian is about $0.70 US). They estimated 10 days for delivery to our address. They did offer expedited shipment for an additional fee. We're fortunate in that we live very close to the Canadian boarder so we DrOve over this morning and picked up a prescription. How much did we save by shopping around via the internet? Our first month's supply was provided by our Vet from a pharmacy in Tenn ... it cost $508. Our vet was very good, he realized this wasn't the best price and asked us to check around. He was willing to provide a prescription to any drug store/pharmacy. By going from name brand liquid to generic tablet and from a US supplier to a Canadian supplier our second month's supply cost us $30(US). A significant savings. The low cost US suppliers were planetrx.com and drugstore.com. Our local Brooks wanted $167 for generic tablets. I hope this information will save you some money. Glenn |
